Are there heavy metals in baby food? Yes, at some level, in most of the category. Lead, cadmium, arsenic, and mercury are present throughout the food supply because they occur naturally in soil, water, and air and move into crops through ordinary agriculture, not through any single ingredient a manufacturer adds. Baby food and infant formula draw on many of the same commodity crops and ingredients, rice among them, as the rest of the food supply, so the same background presence shows up there too. Why heavy metals are in baby food

Heavy metals reach baby food the way they reach any other food: through the soil a crop grows in, the water it is irrigated with, and, for some ingredients, processing and packaging. There is no single step where a manufacturer decides to add lead or cadmium; the metals are already present in the raw ingredient at the point it arrives at a facility, at levels that vary by growing region, crop, and season. Rice is the ingredient most closely associated with this pathway for baby food specifically, because rice is grown flooded and takes up inorganic arsenic from soil and irrigation water more readily than most other grains, and rice appears in infant cereal, rice-based formula, and many toddler snacks. Root vegetables, leafy greens, and cacao-derived ingredients are more associated with cadmium, and fish-containing purees carry the mercury concern common to seafood generally.

How baby food is tested

Accreditation to ISO/IEC 17025 is what signals that a laboratory’s method is controlled and externally assessed rather than simply asserted; a result that does not name the laboratory, the method, and the detection limits is not verifiable.

Two details matter more for this category than for most. The first is species: arsenic and mercury each have a more toxic form, inorganic arsenic within total arsenic and methylmercury within total mercury, and a result reporting only the total can understate the health-relevant fraction, which is why a rice-heavy product like infant cereal should be tested for inorganic arsenic specifically rather than total arsenic alone. The second is basis: infant formula is sold as a powder or as a ready-to-feed liquid, and a result has to state which form was measured, because a powder tested as sold is not comparable to the same product after it is reconstituted with water.
